Periodontal treatment is an advanced gum treatment that involves a deep cleaning of the gumline to help patients who have more complex dental needs when it comes to their gum health. When plaque and tartar build up on the teeth around the gums, this causes the gums to become inflamed and if left untreated this can progress to gum disease which can manifest itself in a number of ways including bleeding gums and the development of little pockets around the base of the teeth where the gum starts to recede or pull away from the tooth itself.
If your dentist is concerned that you may be at risk of developing gum disease they will recommend a periodontal assessment to allow for a specific and thorough examination of the gums themselves. During a periodontal assessment, your dentist will use specialised instruments to gently measure the depth of any pockets that the gums may have formed around the teeth. Your dentist may also take dental x-rays to assess the health of the bone underneath the jaw if necessary
For patients with gum disease, it is crucial to ensure that the correct gum treatment is carried out to slow down the progression of the gum disease and to help maintain the gums. If left untreated, gum disease will continue to worsen causing complications such as deeper pockets around the base of the teeth, receding gums, loosening of the teeth and in severe cases even tooth loss.
